Uncover the History Behind Cancun

The name Cancun is derived from the Mayan name 'Kaan kun'. Linguistic scholars have different translations of the name. Some like to think it means 'nest of snakes' while others think it as 'place of the golden snake'. Whichever translation that takes your fancy, one thing about Cancun holds true - there are very few places on earth that can rival Cancun in attracting tourists.

Cancun is a Mexican city located on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is part of the larger Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The city sits on the Mexican Caribbean Coast and is one of the most easterly places in Mexico.

Before development of the city from January 23, 1970, the city had only 3 residents...just three. Even the financiers were hesitant in funding the resort city. The Mexican government financed the first 9 hotels. The rest is history. Today, Cancun is one of the most visited destinations in the world.

Popular places you can visit include in Cancun include; El Meco archaeological zone, Yamil Lu'um (Temple of the Scorpion), El Castillo, The Cancún Point, and El Rey archaeological zone and many more.

Welcome to Cancun.
