Ever heard of Sian Ka'an? This Is Your Chance To Learn What It Is
Once upon a Mayan time, the original inhabitants of the Sian Ka’an found themselves enjoying the natural beauty of the stretch of coastline facing the East of Yucatan Peninsula. They would baptize the area Sian Ka’an, which is a Mayan translation for ‘Origin of the Sky’. It is a biosphere that is made up of tropical forests, marshes and mangroves, and lagoon marine section that is intersected by a barrier reef.
Sian Ka’an is an area that is heavily endowed with flora and fauna species, with approximately 300 species of birds calling it home. Apart from the birds, the area is inhabited by varied species of terrestrial vertebrates that find the hydrology of the complex suitable for their survival.
Sian Ka’an is part of the larger Quintana Roo State and is one of the largest conservation areas in Mexico, occupying a whopping 528,148 hectares of intricately interlinked marine, terrestrial and coastal ecosystems.
The conservation follows a 120 kilometers coastal stretch, out of which about 400,000 hectares of pure natural vegetation arise. From tropical rainforests to savannah grasslands to pristine wetlands, lagoons and marshlands to beaches and sand dunes, you will find this eco-region an interesting match for the adventure hungry travellers.
About 120,000 hectares of the park are reserved to marine area, of which the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and sea grass beds in the shallow bays is part of. If you enjoy beauty, you just need to relax and enjoy the tantric visual effects made of lush green grass, shades of blue lagoons, tropical rainforest canopies and the turquoise crystal clear Caribbean Sea.
For those who love watching the fauna species, get ready to be ‘wowed’. Among the rare mammals that you are likely to see include puma, jaguar, ocelot, and Central American Tapir. There are also several species of West Indian Manatree birds, and a host of marine species.
You will only have yourself to blame if you do not make it to Sian Ka’an. For your information, very few places on earth can rival the beauty of the Quintana Roo State of Mexico of which Sian Ka’an is part of.
